96 854 T5 Sedan - bought it a couple of weeks ago.

Does this happen on most 850's. or has the bumper been repainted and the paint is peeling off?

What is the right way to fix this? Paint? New bumper cover?

Thanks

Some use Black Shoe polish and I hear IPD sells a spray paint that works good.

I found a NEW solution to the shoe-polish...

Yes, it works, but the price for the small can is like, urgh, easily 3 shoe-polishes combined...

I am not sure if it is available in your area but here it is called the Turtle-Paint or something like that... So far, so good... (One month already...)

Besides, I'm being a cheapskate and trying to see how long can I delay repainting of the bumpers... HAHAHAHAH!

My bumpers are also fading, cracked and peeling off. This is due to the hot weather in my country. Well I've tried using black shoe polish but when I apply it on the bumper, the color looks uneven. Maybe I'll try Turtle-paint....where can i get the paint?? At the hardware shop?? thanks for the info......

Take a look at www.griotsgarage.com for car cleaning and reconditioning products. It's a high end car guys mail order company, and not connected to one car brand or another. I didn't look deep into the on line catalog for their product that will help renew your front bumper, but I'm sure you will find it there. Their products are know to be of the highest quality.....but so is their pricing.

I looked a little deeper online and did not find the product. I sent them an email requesting information and will look for the latest catalog I got in the mail to find the bumper renew product.

From an email from Griot's Garage Customer Service, they have a product called "Bumper and Trim Reconditioner". Prior to applying the reconditioner, prep the surface with their "Paint Prep" to avoid Fisheyeing. They can be contacted by calling 800-345-5789 or on line at: www.griotsgarage.com.

:cat: Good afternoon everybody.

For dehydrated plastics, Meguiar's Gold Class Trim Detailer. It is a brilliant wax treatment. Great for plastic inserts, the black plastic around the wind screen wiper area.

Meguiar's says:

...is the easy, long lasting way to keep plastic trim and rubber molding looking showroom new. We've used new technology to instantly restore colour and richness to faded and discoloured trim...

Over to you.

Cheers :right:

Syed,

You can get it at most Petronas outlets. And I was wrong, it is NOT called the turtle-paint or something like that. But it IS heat-resistant up to 600 degrees Celsius...

RM20 only...

Just guessing, but....
I would say that's just the natural degrading of plastic when exposed to sunlight over along period of time, just like so many tail lights I've seen that are hazy for no reason other than sun exposure.

Again, just a guess, but I'd say there is really very little that can be done long term to fix it. As mentioned above, everybody seems to make a product that cures the problem, but I've never found one that is anything more than a short term cosmetic 'cover-up' type of thing. Like polishing a turd...it still smells.

I've been debating that myself. Take pics...I wanna see how that looks.

I just recoated the bumpers on my sons 850 using Duplicolor bumper coating. Had previously used show dye which worked OK but I wanted a more even finish. I used the shoe dye on the black trim on my white S60 and it still looks good. I would really like to paint the trim white. If you do it make sure you prep the bumper and use a paint that is specific for plastic so that it bonds better.

on the volvos, i don't know, but on an old trans am that i had, it had the whole nose being rubber. it was painted from the factory and looked real nice, until someone bumped you and then the pain fell off. in sheets. even professional restorers had troubles with certain rubber bumpers. i am guessing that in the ensuing years that the rubber bumpers have been produced, the rubber has gotten better or the paint has. not sure, if it has. but, whoever does it first will be bombarded with questions. so who's going to do it first??????

You do it Greek Mr. Money Pants! Haha, I have mentioned this before and was told it looks bad but I always wanted to take off the trim and fill it in to make it flush.

now that sounds cool. but would you paint it body color or a contrasting color? if it's the same color, don't you think it will look too....same? you know, like they did in the late 80's, like every camaro and monte carlo out there. just the same color top to bottom. like those civics. damn i hate those things.
