I know you access the oil filter canister from the top of engine, but where is it?
Is it in front or towards the back and either left or right side? Do I need any
special tools to change oil filter and remove any covers?

Any advice is appreciated!!

Thanks,
Gary

While standing infront of the car and looking at the engine. It is towards your left on the front of the engine. You will have to remove the fresh air hose form by the radiator.

You will need 36MM short socket to get the Case loosened easy to get to the filter.

Thanks so much, I thought that was it. I appreciate a Mustang owner
helping out! I like your Mustang picture. Looks like a mill!

I too am a new Volvo owner. Still have my '93 Ford Taurus SHO, though, which I hope to modify some day. I decided it was time for my first oil change, which I've always enjoyed doing myself, and was surprised by the weight of the oil filter (to my surprise it was a cartridge). I went looking around the engine and noticed what appeared to be the cannister. I was right, as you've confirmed here. However, I had no tool to oen the canister. Is there a special tool available? I found this (http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=MorePartInfo&PartID=307105&siteid=213784&catalogid=1051) but don't know if it is the 35.5 mm required. Does the 36 mm short socket fit properly? Does just the top of the canister come off making for a relatively clean replacement?

Thanks for any advice!
Jay

Jay, you found the top that holds the cartridge. I bought my socket from the
Volvo specialists at IPD (www.ipd.com). You can even change the cartridge with
all the oil in the engine, pull out the cartridge and there is not much mess, though
it is best to drain the oil then replace the filter.

The biggest complaint I have is the fact that you have to remove the entire bottom
undertray just to drain the oil. Why did'nt Volvo just add a window in the tray to
access the drain plug. I think I am going to cut my own windo in the tray so I
don't have to remove the tray for every oil change. I change oil at 3,000 miles,
so that's why I'll change this. The other crazy thing is having to pull the air duct
out just to get to the filter cap. I think they do all this, just to make it a bit of
chore so people will just bring it to the dealer to work on it.

Good luck,

Gary
