Hello Folks,,,,

I am new here and need some help please.....

My fiance was backing the C70 out of the garage and the antenna and the garage door met....destroyed the antenna. I uderstand from the dealership that the whole unit has to be replaced on the C70 and is expensive (400.00) as wellas a total "bear" to replace. Can someone enlighten me on this please. There is a 70.00 antenna on the net available from Audio Etcetera, but I suspect it may be generic junk (may be and hope I am wrong) and would appreciate some comments on both the part and the labor procedure. The dealer said everything was more difficult because of the angles involved???

Thanks for any help....

Nic

You cannot just replace the Mast like on every other Volvo.
The C70 is the only model that you have to replace the entire assembly.

It is a little of a pain. You have to remove the left inside trunk panel.
Then have to loosen and move the Amplifier to get to the Antenna motor.

Im not sure how good an aftermarket one will work.

I am not sure if the post 98 antennas are different than the 98, but when i bought my car it was broken, so I took the whole assembley out of the car, took that apart to get the old mast which was stuck and put a new one in. If you are a little savvy you can do this on your own, there are just a few screws and thats about it.

Thanks gentlemen, I am of the opinion now that it was either a scare tactic by the service advisor or he just simply did not know what he was talking about...either is completely possible :)

I have seen the masts available on e bay and parts places for like $20. The worst case is you open it up and take it out if you cant fix, at least you tried.

Hi there, I chopped my extending mast off in the car wash machine, leaving only one out of the three sections showing!

I went to my dealership who gave me a £30.00 ($50ish) Volvo mast from their stockroom (after saying it needed the whole assembly). It comes with full fitting instructions.

It is easy to fit if you still have any past of the mast showing...with the plastic toothed insert still accessible. If the plastic toothed insert has retracted into the unit...you can still replace it, but it means the whole assembly must be removed from inside the back wing. It is not an easy job, but can be done. The whole mast must be detached from the main assembly, which can be tough, since my mast seemed to be almost glued to the assembly...but with elbow grease, you can get it off. Then take the cover off the circular housing for the toothed insert and remove the old one from inside. The mast then just attaches back on and will operated for testing, even without being fitted.

It is a time consuming job, in a tight spot, but worth saving the money.

Hope that helps

I too am faced with a snapped C70 convertible antenna mast.
Model is a 2000 LPT.

Any urls to places I can purchase the replacement part, that folks know to work?
Any how-to guides available?

I have a trusty Haynes manual on-order hopefully it has a few pointers...

Thanks,
Simon

Can anyone explain what this plastic toothed insert is? Can you see it front the outside or do you still have to pull the inside panel off? My C70 antenna works but its bent.

What you have to do it take a wrench and take off the nut that holds the antenna in place. If you look at the base of the antennal where it comes out of the car you will see that is actually a nut.
I would have the radio off then take off this nut
then once you take this off this nut have some one turn the radio on
the un-bent part of your antennal will start to rise out of the car as it does this hold onto it and gently guide it up and then keep pulling it gently once it is fully out and the whole antenna should lift from the car with this long tooth plastic thing hanging below.
Take not of which direction the teeth of the plastic thing are facing as you need to replace it in the same direction
The plastic thing goes down into the assembly and wraps around a gear like wheel, thats how it goes up and down.
To put the new one in, make sure the teeth are facing the correct way, if they are not then when you go to feed it in nothing will catch and you will know its facing the wrong way, turn the radio off and it will put the antenna back into the car, replace nut.

I took the whole thing apart once when I could not fix it the above way and it was not too hard at all if you are good at taking things apart and just putting them back together the same way. There were a few screws holding it to the car and a few holding it together, the hardest part for me was removing this plastic tube from the assembly.

Try just taking the mast out first if possible. I have seen replacement masts on ebay and I think some of the speciality volvo stores sell them too.

Thanks, I think I get it now. When I read teeth I was thinking gear but now I'm getting a picture of a stip with teeth on one side that winds up and pulls the antenna down as a gear inside catches the teeth. Sound about right?

I saw the masts on ipd's site the other day. I haven't emailed them to ask yet but aren't all C70 antennas black not silver?

I have a silver car and its silver. I think they are all silver. However the very top cap of the antenna is black to match the black part that is mounted to the outside of the car.

Unless mine has been replaced (or is really dirty ;) ) its black. The whole rest of the car is black so that seems to make sense.

Why is this thing so difficult to remove!!! Any advice from anyone please. Thanks. I am headed back out to find a way.

Yes remove the cover while taking note of order that bushings and other items come out. Remove the broken gear strip. Reverse the process.
Installing the new antenna
Have someone turn on the radio while you are at the back of car with new antenna, have them turn off the radio while you are inserting the new antenna. Repeat and it will self calibrate.
