I have a 2005 XC90 that the fuel pump went out on. The dealer replaced the in tank pump and returned the car back to me. After driving approx 2 miles the car quit again. It seems the fuel pump has went out again! After checking around, I've found an owner of a 2005 S80 that has had the fuel pump replaced 4 times and has quit running again. I've also talked to other dealers with similar stories. Is there anyopne with any knowledge of this ? Any responses appreciated.

Fuel pump stopped on my 03 XC-90 today. It's going to the shop today. This may be the final straw after many reliability issues like wheel bearing, rotors, transmission, engine problems of various sorts.

We have a 2004 XC90 T6 AWD that has had numerous problems. The most frequent of which is stalling problems. My wife was driving 65 miles an hour and the entire engine just quit. We had it towed and the Volvo shop called asking why it was towed because it started right up. They eventually replaced the fuel pump after looking at some computer info. Since then we have had at least four additional stalls (including 2 while crossing busy traffic). Just got it back again today - still no problem found they wanted to insinuate to my wife that it may be occurring because she's low on gas and trying to go uphill - great feature of a 45k car and highly unlikely!!! I personally don't think it's the fuel pump at all as you can see numerous forum postings on many web site detailing the failure/stall and then a replacement (or multiple replacements) of the fuel pump followed by continued stalls. Also if you recall our first failure - somehow the fuel pump repaired itself by the time it was towed in??? I have little doubt the issue is in the computer system and one or more of the programs has a bug or two or three . . . Depending on the driving conditions the fuel pump is given instructions by the computer to deliver fuel at X increments at Y speed to properly power the vehicle. It would seem that under certain conditions the computer is giving bad instructions to the fuel pump and it does not deliver enough fuel or at the right time to provide power when needed - thus the stalls. If you look across the many, many web postings on this issue they keep replacing the fuel pumps and the problems keep returning. They need to be looking at completing a complex review of the computer programming but that would be very costly to Volvo and take a lot of time so it's cheaper to keep replacing fuel pumps for now and hope we all get tired of bringing our XC90's in for service. My biggest concern is from a safety standpoint as a stall when trying to crossover a busy fast moving road to make a left turn could end up deadly if the car stalls at the wrong time - hopefully it won't come to that before Volvo really fixes this. Personally I'm getting pretty scared to have my wife and two kids drive it, which is highly ironic since one of the main reasons we purchased it was for the “safety” factor.
