OK, So I bought this '99 S80 2.9 Auto w/ ~70k on it. Now I am @ 153k miles and along the way have done the following:

ABS rebuild (sent out, inexpensive and effective)
New tranny (Local mechanic was kind, under 3K total for everything)
Battery
An ignition coil
V-belt
regular tune-ups
always syn oil, K&N air filter, best stuff I can get
Ignition coil ("immobilizer", won't start, etc... Dealer said it was the sensor)

Now here are my symptoms:

1.Vehicle burns ~ qt. of oil every 1000 miles
(My average commute ~ 100 miles/day @ 80 MPH or so, occasionally 100,110+)

2.Immobilizer thing in my face again after only ~ 4000 miles post-repair

3.Love the car, hate when it won't start for no apparent reason
(Really PITA - no steering wheel local, no sensor, hit the starter with a
rubber mallet and got it going the other day - is it luck?)

So my questions are:

1. Is it normal for these to burn oil like this if you drive hard (as I do)?

2. The immobilizer message is usually followed by some airbag BS - sometimes it takes 5 minutes, sometimes 55 minutes to start.

3. How difficult is the starter to replace yourself - are there any links to walk me through testing this, removing, installng, etc...

I've done most of what you had done. I've noticed that I have to replace oil if I have had to accelerate hard for any length of time to speak of. I've noticed the same thing with all my cars over the years. Drive as if you are running it in-you'll never use oil. I would say I've never had to replace as much oil as you though. I tend to nurse the car-petrol being $1.59.9c per litre.

I love the acceleration-but the petrol hurts too much.

Hey Auckland, you are too right about the cost of petrol.

The other day I spent $108 filling my car. Ouch!

This is the first time I have spent more than $100 filling my car ever...
$100 is a psychological barrier I guess.

One would think by paying so much tax on petrol, they would at least fix the traffic gridlock problem in Auckland. But no, now there's talk on road tolling on roads, that we, the public already owns & funded through high taxation.

Extortion!
