Hi all - new on here, and never thought I'd find myself on a Volvo forum ;-)
I'm based in Scotland, and have my first (Company-Lease) Volvo, a 2005 V50.
Yesterday, after driving 1/2 mile to the shops, it wouldn't let me back in. None of the buttons on the key worked. Course, it's blowing a freezing Northerly gale at the time, and I've left the house in T-shirt, 'cause I'm just picking up the Sunday paper.
Anyway, walked back to the house and picked up spare key.
Returned to car (well wrapped up this time!) but same result: nothing....
In desperation, I used the emergency key to get in (but the alarm didn't go off as I'd expected) stuck it in the slot, and it started just fine.
Drove home, uneventfully, but after I'd switched off, when I opened the door, the electric driver's seat started moving.... ??? Could using the spare key cause that?
Bizarre.
I also ride a Harley (when it's a wee bit warmer), and have heard of problems with radio transitters blocking the key functions, especially at ports and so on. The shop I stopped at is within a few hundred yards of an ambulance station.
Question is, has anyone had a similar problem, and is there a cure?
Does anyone know why the seat started working on its own, and why the alarm didn't sound when entering with the mechanical key???
Any answers gratefully received thanx!

:cat: Hi there banquo.

I can't answer all your questions-but I might be able to confuse you further very easily.

When you used the second key-the car will respond to the setting left in that particular key by the last person who used it.

You can reset the key simply by leaving it in the ignition hole in the On position and changing the seat settings using the Memory switch on the seat. You do have instructions for that in the owner's manual.

As for the weather, alarm etc (I hope your Sunday paper had some interesting articles in it), sorry, I can't do much about that from here. I usually get my horoscope and solve the children's puzzles in our Sunday papers!

Thanx Aukland. That solves the seat mystery. I knew the keyless versions had some kind of ID attached, but didn't realise it affected the keyed system too...
I've let the dealer know, but I prefer to be forewarned before letting them loose on it.
Sunday paper carried Scotland's unusual win over England at the Rugby, so was worth the pneumonia perhaps...

Hi Banquo

As much as I hate to agree with Auckland (I'm from South Africa) - he is correct - it is the settings saved in the key that change the position of the seat. My wife and I are of different heights and instead of pressing the memory button on the seat we just use different keys. Once the door is locked and one of us opens it then the seat will change to the desired position.

I can imagine how cold it is for you guys up north - but here in "sunny" South Africa we've had nothing but English weather for the last 3 months i.e. rain, rain, rain followed by more rain, downpours, showers and more rain - interspersed with one or two sunny days - so count yourself lucky it wasn't raining when you were locked out

:offtopic: Hey Auckland - see the latest cricket score? against the Aussies - pro-20?? :offtopic:
