Hi all,
My 440 is a 1994 model, when I turn the steering to the right the horn sounds continuously, this has nessesitated taking the fuse out, checked the wiring and the horn and they seem ok, anybody know how to solve this problem? The car is fitted with an airbag.

Thanks in anticipation

Unless you fancy only doing left turns from now on, suggest you replace the horn switch (in the central pad in the steering wheel) with one from a breaker's yard! The only other thing it might be is a wiring fault at the top of the steering column.

First making sure you know the radio code, disconnect the battery earth lead & don't start work for 2 minutes after that, to ensure that the airbag system is de-energised. Be very gentle with & around the airbag.

Best of luck - please let us know how you get on.

Hi BB,
Thanks for the help, I did as you said but the airbag light is now on on the dashboard, can you buy these units and fit them yourself? or can you disable the airbag permanently, as Im sure Volvo dealers would be rubbing their hands together with glee as I drive onto the forecourt.
The horn problem was'nt fixed when I put it back to together either, I am unfortunetly in a hurry as the car is overdue its NCT (MOT in Ireland)
Thanks for your kind help so far.

So the horn is still sounding when you turn right, even with the replacement switch? If you've checked the horn & the wiring in the engine bay, then as I said before, all that really leaves is a wiring fault near the steering wheel/upper steering column. It sounds like a bare live wire is shorting in the horn circuit when the wheel is turned right.

Re the airbag, it would be wrong & reckless of me to advise you to do anything but fix the fault. If the warning light wasn't on before, then all indications are that it has been caused by something that happened when you changed the horn switch. Is fuse no. 11 OK (check with battery earth lead disconnected)? If yes then would suggest leaving the battery earth disconnected & gently checking the airbag unit & its wiring to ensure that nothing is loose, trapped, damaged or misrouted.

If no luck, rather than a Volvo dealer a good auto electrician should be able to help for less Euros.

Interested to know what the faults turn out to be.
