Hi,

I need some advice. I've got a 1995 Volvo 440 2.0 petrol. After going a bit too quickly over a speed hump, with the air conditioning on, the car developed a rattling-clunking noise, the ignition lights (reds) came on, power steering lost its power and the engine started getting hot. When I turned off the air-con it all quietened down and went back to normal, so I assumed that the problem was the air conditioning compresser.

Since the noise and other problems only happened when the air-con was on, I ignored it for a week, driving daily. The clunking started happening every time I started the car, but stopping as soon as I was moving, then yesterday it got fairly constant and the car threw the waterpump drivebelt.

I've had a look at it, I can't see anything obviously wrong - the drivebelt seems in good condition, the only thing that looks strange is the crankshaft pulley - it is in two separate parts, the inner hub which is bolted to the crankshaft, and the outer part which sits loosely around the hub with about 5mm clearance all around. Photo is attached (photo is the crankshaft pulley as seen through the right front wheel arch, with the drivebelt out of the way).

Anyway, the noise seems to be coming from the crankshaft pulley, or something near it.

Also, any idea whether it would be safe to drive to a mechanic? (after refitting the drive belt, of course)

Difficult to say from 1 photo, but the crankshaft pulley looks elliptical/damaged.

If this is how it looks to the naked eye i.e. the clearance between the inner & outer sections is not consistent through 360 degrees, then suggest that you do not start the engine again until the pulley has been replaced & a new accessories drivebelt, cambelt (& maybe tensioner(s)) fitted too.

can only think that the pulley hit the speed bump!

Interested to know how the pulley diameter measures through 360 degrees.....

Good luck.

I tried to capture it in the photo, the pulley isn't bent, it's in two parts: an inner hub which is bolted onto the crankshaft, and an outer part which sits loosely around it - think a spoked wheel with the spokes removed.

The hub has a low rim around its centreline, which fits loosely into a matching shallow groove in the outer part.

I was hoping another 1995 440/460/480 owner could tell me if theirs was anything like this, or whether there is a friction surface or spacer or somesuch missing from between the outer and inner parts of the pulley.

Here's a couple of photos of the crankshaft pulley out of the car. Is this how it should be - it doesn't seem right, but I can't see any evidence of something broken off?

The pulley appears to have "collapsed" Adam - never seen anything like it before!

Can you source a used one from a breaker's yard or online? When you see a whole one, you will realise exactly what's happened to it. I really can only think that it's impact damage from the speedbump you mentioned - if you go back there, you might find the rest of the pulley in the road! You'd be best advised to remove the crankshaft sprocket as well, to inspect the sprocket and the crankshaft oil seal for damage, but make sure you align all timing marks at TDC before attempting this.

Personally, when re-assembling with a new crankshaft pulley I would also fit a new accessories drivebelt, cambelt (& a new cambelt tensioner) and just maybe a new water pump.

Please let us know how you get on.
