I am having trouble with 10year old 850 estate boiling over - I've drained it and filled it as per Haynes Instruction manual to no avail. It'll do 50 -80 miles with the guage bang on the middle then suddenly the temp will go up and start blasting steam/water out of the expansion cap. I've replaced the cap and the thermostat seems to be opening ok. No leaks of any kind.Any help would be much appreciated.

:cat: Hi there charlie.

I thought you have to use a radiator coolant with water.

The coolant does not boil, rust or freeze.

Are you using the mixture?

Sorry Charlie sounds like it may be your head gasket.
Run y7our engine with the rad cap off and sniff the water,if it smells gassy it will be your gasket.
If it smells OK feel the radiator for cold spots,if you have any then your rad is blocked.
Run your engine and grip the hoses with your hand and see if you can feel the water flowing,no flow ,water pump gone.

Thanks for this Goldy. The coolant in the reserve is most definitely 'gassy' fumey or whatever. I also noticed a couple of drops of water on the dip stick this morning.

The question now is do I spend money on it (wheel bearings also needing replaced) or do I say farewell to a car thats taken me 145000 miles virtually trouble free over the past 10 years and move on.

Probably the latter I think.

Cheers

Charlie

I would say it is the head gasket as well...

In any case, does the coolant turn dark? As in it is mixed with oil?

As for letting the car die, well, is the cost of replacing the head gasket huge there? Here, I'd do a head gasket anytime of the year.
