Hi (and HELP!) I have just bought a '94 440li with CVT and 50,000 miles on the clock. All is fine but for a drone (loud enough to be very irritating) from what I presume is the CVt since the noise stops when the car is at idle... any ideas as to confirmation / cure please as this will drive me mad (and for me that's a short ride...) Thanks1 PS I am presuming it is the CVT (dangerous as I am no mechanic) but can't think what else it could be. The car drives smoothly and the gears seem fine but for the noise which is NOt the slight whistling that the handbook mentions, it is a continuous drone / whine but not screechy like a slipping fanbelt for instance...

:00000732:

The 440 with CVT isn't that common in the UK. Most 440 autos had a traditional 4 speed automatic transmission.

There's a chap at the Volvo Owner's Club - George Dickinson - who knows a great deal about CVT. Might be worth you contacting him via their website.

The mileage (50,000) seems very low & the CVT should be good for at least double that.

Apart from recommending checking the transmission fluid level or flushing/changing the fluid (do this if it has turned brown), you may need to take it to a CVT specialist garage. I believe that the 440's CVT uses a steel belt rather than the "rubber" type used in the 66 & 340 models.

Any other forum members out there & familiar with CVT please?

Good luck.
