I currently own a 1991 240 sedan in exelent shape, 192,000 miles on the clock. I also have a 1992 Ford 5.0 Mustang with the T5 Manual transmission connected. The 5.0 and trans both run good. I wanted to know if anyone has done this conversion on there own. I have seen many 240 engine swaps and many of which are 5.0 fords stuffed under there. I know of a few places that do this conversion but i am very mechanicly enclined, and also work for a local Volvo dealership, (Stutz Volvo, Salem, MA). I have the tools to do this conversion i'm sure, but i was more concerned with the computer systems of both cars that are an obvious obstacle to overcome. If anyone has any advise, or some kind of set of instructions out there i would love to take at them and hopefully make my dreams of blowing by corvettes and porches on the highways in my 240 that looks to be stock, a reality.

I'd be inclined to stiffen the chassis and spring rates which will sure help matters and even be necessary.... even for stockish but heavy 5.0 as anemic as would be typically found in a 92 stang. I can't see how it would be too major a production to make happen but for your aspirations.... I'd be leaning towards at least a 1hp/CID type engine..... maybe even a very afffordable 383 SBC.... injected or carb'd is easy enough. Late model Vettes and Porsches are not jokes.

one other thing that merely appears to be a possible weak link in the Vette hunting mission...... the rear end unit appears to be even smaller and less robust than those found under S10's

and I've had more than one of them with 383's installed

had to leave the differential open for hole shots as they would explode if you got them to hook up but they did ok for 140mph romps down the superslap

Bojangles,
I am not experienced with the 5 point slo, but have done two Chevy 350 conversions. Both were 1978 240's, and retained only the rear end as Volvo (motor, trans, and driveshaft Chevy). I hammer both of these cars regularly, and have never had a rear end problem, other than lack of traction. Both of my conversions eliminated the Volvo computer (which only controlled engine functions). If your model year uses the computer to control the a/c or cruise control, you may have to do some hard re-wiring to kep these operating. The stock front springs will probably be OK, although on my second car I put IPD lowering springs on front and rear. The biggest challanges I had were the shift linkage and speedometer hookup ( I ended up buying aftermarket units, B&M and VDO, respectively). Check out the Garage feature, under 242 models, and Skip Tuel to see my current car.

I have finally decided that i am going to put the ford 5.0 in my 240 as a definate. I would really like to be able to blow away those kids in there honda's who think there car is the nuts... Not only that but i work at a volvo dealership, and therefore have access to fix just about anything that comes along durring the transformation. I will post pictures, and steps that i take along the way for those interested. Maybe if i get ambitious enough i'll add to my website and give it it's own page.

Look up Converse Engineering in Portland ME. They have done the 5.0 conversion for the likes of David Letterman & Paul Newman http://www.converseengineering.com/

May be some good info for you there.

I always wanted to do the Chevy SB, bought the JTR manual years ago, someday I'll do it.

Way ahead of you... Converse Engineering is actually in Naples maine down the street from my summer home. And i have already decided on getting there kit to do the conversion. I will post pictures of before, complete inside and out of the car. Durring, engine bay, engine removal, and modifications. And the after, inside, engine compartment, exhaust routing. I will also try and create a procedure or list of extras that will be needed other than the donor engine (or entire 1992 mustang in my case), connectors, hoses, and relays needed. I would also appricate it if anyone who has already done this swap has any tips or advise on how to go about doing the switch. Thanks in advance!
