Typically the directions to do this will come with the label.

The one that I did was via the intake manifold near the throttle body...

Yeah, for FIRST time, always do that... Then learn from what and how the mechanic does it... Next, you should be OK, especially for simple things like this...

Used to do it using "redex" years back. Could either put a measured amount into the air intake, or remove the plugs and add direct to the piston. Always created a cloud of smoke and car would run noticably better, at least for a while or until you just got used to it.

They say the effects are less these days with all the additives in fuel doing the job for you anyway, and havent tried it for many years now.

Ya know, I had an idea thats what to use. A mate did it to his motor a while back in an underground car park. Not the brightest of ideas, but fun at the same time.

decarbing is essential! no matter how many detergents are in fuel they do not do the same job! the biggest difference will be in fuel mileage rather than performance.

Hi, I heard or read somewhere that the Volvo S40 engine (1996) is actually designed to run on 97-99 RON unleaded petrol, but that Volvo specifically requested that it run on Ron 95, which is what I am using. Surely this has a significant effect on the longevity of the engine as it's a less clean fuel.

Would the process you describe help?

Has anyone tried running the S40 on a higher value fuel?

if it isnt turbo there is no point on running on a higher octane. if it is turbo, you will get better performance but it wont damage the engine if you dont
