:cat: Good morning everybody.

I just saw a 1989 480 ES for sale on our Trademe site. The owner listed:

www.volvo-480-europe.org

in the owner details. I checked this site and noted that they have a VIN reader on their site. I didn't look at it. Membership registration is required. Look at what their membership registration involves:

"Processing this form may take anywhere between a few hours and a few weeks."

If the VIN reader does what I think it does-could we have a VIN reader installed on Volvo Forums?

Looking forward to hearing from you

Cheers :)

Sounds like a good idea. But what exactly does a VIN Reader do...??

:cat: Good morning Ampangbear. If the VIN reader is what I think it is, it breaks down the VIN number for you. As you know, your VIN is about seventeen digits long and tells you the:

year
country
model
engine
transmission
body colour
interior colour
trim-leather/plastic/whatever
chassis number
etc

your particular vehicle DNA spiral information-for want of a better image.

Cheers :)

Oh, but I think we already have it somewhere here...

If I find it, i'd pin it up for easier reference...

here is what i have so far. its nothing great, but it works ( up to the 5th vin digit )

http://silasbellamy.com/volvovin.php

and its pretty simple too. Ex.

CODE
$safety = strtoupper($_POST["codethree"]);
switch ($safety){
 case 'A':
 echo 'Airbag';
 break;
 case 'X':
 echo 'Mechanical Belt';
 break;
 case 'S':
 echo '4 Door with Airbag';
 break;
 case 'W':
 echo 'Wagon with Airbag';
 break;
 case 'T':
 echo '4 Door with Mechanical Belt';
 break;
 default:
 echo 'Wrong value entered!';
}

i think for the final version, i'll have it all prettied up with css, and show images with the results ( ie. 240, shows a 240. airbag, shows airbag :P )

Thankyou Auckland!

The basic coding is now complete, after 377 Lines of code. ;)

It'll work and all, it just won't give you in-depth details about stuff, which i plan to add in the near future :P

Enjoy everyone!

edit: theres takes a couple weeks?? thats insane...mine takes seconds:P depending on how fast a typer you are.

:blush: Glad to do my part.

My only wish is that i could have included NEWER models as well. But alas, after searching i couldn't find any info on VIN'S for vehicles newer than 1996.

But still a good referance for older volvos.

edit: oh and i didn't do upholstery or anything like that...i learned that every year they changed the codes for that, and it would be way way too much to do that as well. Plus thats a different number altogether. nothing of that is included in the VIN. thats in an upholstery number it seems.
