Hello everybody. Does anyone know how the manual under-bonnet adjusters are supposed to work? My headlamps are set too high and although OK for MOT, when I have my stuff in the boot they dazzle too many people on these Yorkshire backroads.

I'm reluctant to apply brute force to the plastic adjuster heads without knowing what the other threaded plastic bits are.

I have given everything relevant (that I can see) a good dose of slippery hydrocarbons. My mole grips await, just in case.

Is there any logic to the placing of the adjusters? One presumably does vertical waft and the other does horizontal sweep. Which and why?

This is my second Volvo. We had a 360 GLT that I bought to tide me over for a few months. We did over 60,000 miles in it in 5 years and me and the wife both had life threatening accidents (or would have been so in any other car) from which we walked away without a scratch. Alas, a low speed head on impact later crushed the front bumper and the mingie insurance company wrote the car off. Very sad day. Three months into my 440, it is very different but just as good. Best wishes to all.

Hi Jim.

The bottom adjuster is the one you want, as it moves the beam up & down. The top adjuster moves the beam to the left & right.

Once you get them moving they'll be OK, but you'll need to use your own judgement as to how "brutal" you are to achieve this. Try turning them by hand & only use grips as a last resort.

Best of British!

By the way Jim, UK members are planning a meet - see Regional forum - Europe - UK subforum if you're interested.
