Don't get me started. (Again)

Mine was going on so often and causing me so many trips to the dealer I just gave up on it and would just turn it off every time I started the car.

The last time I took it to the dealer they seemed to fix it. I went about 2 weeks and it did not go on. Then one day my son was backing into the drive. No reverse light, and no turn signal.

Checked the message center and the warning was not on. Restarted the car no message. What a piece of junk feature.

Try some bulb grease. You can get it for under a dollar at Autozone. Used some recently and haven't had any problems since (keeping fingers crossed).

I was afraid I was the only one thinking that. Anything like headlight fluid?

The grease I got at Autozone was in a little package like a couple of Alka Seltzer or a wet wipe. You just smear a little on the bulb (it has to be one that is good) and reinsert it. I think the grease is supposed to help keep them from shorting out. I'm not really sure but for under $1 if it works then who cares how.

"bulb grease" is conductive grease meant to stop oxidation of the electrical contacts and promote conductivity. Oxidation is a natural process that occurs on most metals and the effect is that the "resistance" is increased which in-turn is sensed by the computer as a change to the current flow through the light circuit.

I think.

I would suggest cleaning the metal portion of the bulb with a green scrub pad, or something like that, and then after making sure the bulb is dry apply the grease.

All:
I just got a "position bulb failure" yesterday. Which light is it? They all seem to be fine.

Thanks!

Does anyone know exactly which bulb is the 'position' bulb? There is no mention of the 'position' bulb in my manual (2002 S60).

From what I gather from the other thread on this, the 'position' lights are the parking lights ?

The position bulb is number 4 in diagram below
also S60's are very sensitive to cheap quality bulbs

I talked to a volvo tech and this has been an ongoing issue since the S60 inception in the US. Most just require the buld to be removed and reseated. I have had my S60 since new(02). I have had 35 bulb position failures, but only needed to replace one. It's a nusiance, but you become a pro at changing out lamps.

This thread has really helped. I just pulled the bulb out of my 04 S60. The message is gone and, I assume, some light now is not working. From reading this thread, it is the parking light which is not really necessary---unless I am missing something.

So, the question is----am I missing something? Can I just leave the bulb out?

Try slamming the trunk with gusto. I had the pesky "position bulb..." message twice in three years and it worked both times. By the way, I checked all the lights and everthing was working before and after.

I dont think it is the bulbs as such - I think it is the holder.

I have similar problems with the turn signal failure - I had it with the drivers side (the really awkward one to get into requiring removal of the washer filler neck)
I cleaned the holder and contacts to no avail - I spent hours trying to stop the message and even removed the contacts from the holder and adjusted them so all the conections were tighter and eventually the message went away.

Guess what though - I'm now getting the same message but this time it's the passenger side thats playing up

And I can't be sure but when I had the position bulb failure message - I found it was the tail lights (no2 in S60-MBS post at #13) there are two on each side (10W I think) - I just cleaned things up and touch wood had not had that message since.

This happens about once a month in my 04, if just tap ever so lightly on my rear tail light that is out it pops on and lasts for another month. Thats why slaming the trunk would work, but more violent. When I say tap lightly I mean as hard as you strike a key on your keyboard.
