1993 Volvo 850. Car just decided not to start any more. It was running great then all of the sudden it just won't start. Did a bunch of checking and find that the fuel pump doesn't seem to be working. Removed the fuel filter and turned the ignition, no fuel comes out of the open line. With key in the 2 position I do hear a little whirring noise in the engine compartment.
There's at least 4 gallons in the fuel tank.
Can't tell if the fuel pump is getting power or not. Could it be the fuel relay?
Any advice??
Rich

If you hear anything from the trunk area the pump is working.

Could be the fuel pump controller.

1. Remove controller (under fuse box in engine compartment)
2. Jumper wire across fore and aft terminals of the relay socket. You can keep the relay out for now.
3. Pump should pump continuously with ignition on
4. If pump doesn't run continuously then it is your pump. I made the mistake and bought a used pump before checking farther (if you want it I'll sell it cheaper than I bought, dealer is $$$$$$$, ebay was $50, I'll be less)
5. If pump runs then try to start the engine
6. If engine starts AND RUNS like it used to then it is the controller
7. If it still doesn't run then it might be the RPM sensor (which feeds the ECU and then feeds the controler) -- this is so that the fuel pump will stop running if you have an accident and the engine stops.

My problem was the fuel pump controler -- I took it apart and soldered a few places. It runs great now.
