Hi all

Just been given a 440 XI. Now has a new MOT. Had to change the waterpump, great fun in the cold.
Any hints about bleeding the coolant system greatly appreciated.

It depends on which engine is in the car as to where the air bleed screw is located - it could be on the top hose near the thermostat housing, on the T piece that goes into the cylinder head or even on the supply hose from the expansion tank to the radiator.

Wherever it is, make sure the cabin heater system is set to its hottest position, open the bleed screw & fill the system with suitable mix, closing the bleed screw fully once the mixture flows continuously out of it without any more bubbles. Then fill the expansion tank up to its "MAX" line, leave the expansion bottle cap off, start the engine & run at fast idle for 4 minutes while an assistant tops up the expansion tank to the "MAX" line as necessary with pre-mixed coolant. Switch engine off, re-fit expansion bottle cap & again run the engine at a fast idle until the engine temperature gauge reaches normal level & the electric cooling fan has cut in as well. Switch off, allow to cool right down, remove the expansion bottle cap slowly & carefully & again, top-up with ready-mixed coolant to the "MAX" line & replace the cap. Best to keep an eye on the temperature gauge & the coolant level for a few days after job finished.

Hope this helps.
