Any stories of this...?

Any (and I mean ANY) story, whether you heard it from your dad-friends'-mom's-uncle's-nephew's-housemate's-girlfiend will do. :haha:

Facts are, of course, a bonus...

Thanks!

completely possible. just swap inst panels.
on the older cars, you can disassble the speedo, push the pin out on the idler gear, and roll it over by hand. on the really old, hook a drill up, and roll it foward. not doing anything illegal here, had to adapt my electric speedo into a mechanical for my r-sport dash setup.

:haha:

OK, so what of the records in the ECU...? Wouldn't it still show a different odo-reading as compared to the one on the dash?

My initial readings show that ECU readings would be the BEST! And thus far, the dealers here all say that ECU odo tampering is almost impossible. (Yeah right....)

However, there have been a few instances where a friend / or a few went to the authotised dealers to check on a car they just visited from the salesroom, and when they quoted the registration number, they found out last the last visit to the dealers was at a meter reading of say 100,000 kms, but just 10 minutes ago, they saw the odo reading at 88,000 kms! There! How's that possible, if no tempering is performed?

(Of course, for this to work, the car needs to be well, serviced at the authorised dealers that are computer-networked allover the country (literally just 2 of them here)...

:cat: Hi there. This is slightly :offtopic: But a new owner of an imported BMW brought through a non-franchised car sales yard took the car to the BMW agent for servicing-I think the usual oil, filter, spark plug routine.

While being serviced, the agent connected the car to the BMW network and discovered the odometer read considerably different from the computer network.

After complaints, forms filled in and various other enquiries-the car dealer made an awfully nice donation to the Government coffers and refunded the purchase price to the owner. Wasn't that nice of him?

From memory-that occured about two years ago. I don't think any other dealer has made any such donation to the Government since then!!

I wonder why?

problem w/ that is i've had ecu's go at as little as 80k.
the odo off, could be that is was in for 100k service and they put the milage in the wrong box.
dealer records aren't safe, since most dealers never see the car after the warranty is up.
best solution, at the yearly state inspection, document mileage. that way it can only be off a years driving max.
i also wish the usa would do like the uk, allow dmv records to be viewed online. instead of paying a service 20+ to do it.

AGguy7,

The small gears teeth inside the odo might be broken. You need to have them replaced. There was a nice walkthrough on this that I encountered long ago but am really sorry that I forgot where it was...
:(

Sorry...
