Hello all - just joined the forum because my student son is having a problem with his J reg Volvo 440: out of the blue the steering lock has decided to engage and we havent been able to release it since! The ignition key still goes into the lock, but only turns a short way, then nothing else happens. He's tried lubricating it, and wiggling steering wheel and key together: no joy! I've sent him the spare key to try; but if that doesn't work we don't know what else to try without it becoming too expensive for a student. Does anyone have any ideas that we can try? Please

Not sure about the 440 but when i had my old Nova it was a very simple job to remove the casing around the steering wheel and access the ignition key cylinder thingy. If its similar then maybe your son could do the same and check for something obstructing the steering lock mechanism?

Maybe it's something as simple as a piece of plastic falling into a cog?

Good luck!

At the same time as slightly turning the key when wiggling the steering wheel, try pulling & pushing the key in & out slightly.

If that doesn't free it then you are faced with removing the steering column and drilling out the lock mounting shear-bolts.

If it does free it, turn the key to position 2 & using a very small screwdriver, allen key or similar, depress the securing pin through the small hole in the housing - the lock cylinder can then be pulled out & either repaired (unlikely) or replaced.

Good luck.
