A full race 1969 Boss 429 Mustang withdual 785 Holly's 13:1 compression ratio, a 617 lift cam and headers only. Dad used to drag race this car and when they fired it up in the garage and you were standing there it would make your insides rumble. AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH SWEET!!

More of a motorbike person myself but i have to admit the 5 cylinder engines in the 850's etc sound just right to me...not overstated but you know there is a cracking lump at the other end!

Always remember a Ford Sierra Cosworth at a service station some years back up in Scotland, the note out of the exhaust at idel belonged more to an electric synthasiser than an internal combustion engine! Left an impression on my teenage mind.

Apart from that the old VW Beetle engines had a wonderfull warble to them, mine was even better with a huge hole in the exhaust.......talk about thunder

My 240 wagon, that now has no tail pipe or backbox. Sounds great, not rough like most cars with a dead exhaust.

Heard it squeaking when I revved so I had a shake at it and found it was about to fall off. So I pulled it off and threw it in the boot, then dumped it in the scrap metal skip at work.

You can hear me before you see me, people turn to see what it is. Then see this old wagon trundling down the road. :bwekk:

Ha Ha Ha!

Stu.

There is no engine sound that can compare with the music of a high-compression 1950s or 1960s American V8 with a headers and a free-flowing dual exhaust.

i suppose any big block v8, a tuned supercar, or the whine of an f1 v10. heard a second generation range rover with a sports system that sounded like the general lee himself! we watched that pass a few times!
and of course, my s40 with the jetex back box and pipercross induction kit. sounds amazing, but fuel economy goes to hell since i drive two gears below what i should be in!

I was down at volvo service, and an Aston DB9 went charging up the road - the sound was HUGE! My favourite was a friend's Ford Falcon hardtop - fully worked 351, 2 X twin throat carbs, extractors etc - snarled and throbbed at the same time. The R has got a pretty good sound, too given a kick in advanced mode...

I have to agree with xpiecemealx... those subaru engines sound damn clean. Especially the STIs... just the right amount of import mixed with muscle in my opinion.
