I recently purchased a 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo. I love the car btw. When i bought it the brakes were making a squeeling noise indicating a change was needed. No problem, I replaced both the front and rear brakes the pads were wore and needed to be changed. the problem is the squeeling never stopped and is worse now than ever. I have checked the new brakes and they are in good condition, nearly new they are only 2 months old. Does anyone have any ideas on how i can fix this problem? Please help the noise is so loud I hate driving the car.

use different pads. volvo, mintex, or ebc. chamfer the leading and trailing edges. clean everything, be anal about it. put anti-squel on both sides of the shims. rough up the surface of the rotor. last, heat cycle them correctly. ever brake job i've done this way = no squel, anyone else, or at the shop, = squel.

Thank you for the information. I heard that if you did not use genuine Volvo brakes the noise may occur. Maybe there is something to that.

While you are doing the pads (anti squeel them as mentioned earlier) you might also check the condition of the rotors. If they are scored, groved, etc. much past the "smooth" stage (also considering the age of the car) you might have them turned. If they are in bad/not so good shape the pads will wear down to fit the old rotors. It will work, but new pads could use a smooth rotor. Just my thoughts. :)

yeah, my car does the same thing. some of the rotors are a little groved so i'm guessing i'll have to get new rotors. but every time i take it to a shop to have any work done on the car i always ask them to check my pads and they always say the pads are fine. so for now i'm just dealing with the squeeling. the funny thing is i even took the breaks all apart and added anti-squeel stuff to both sides of the shims and that helped take away the sound for about a week and then it came right back. i had to laugh when that happened.

any truth to the volvo only pads?

I think it's not true. Others have used many aftermarket brands for the pads, and they are OK. No complaints whatsoever. The bite remains.

I think it's the rotors. Go to the workshop, and tell them to check the ROTORS (not the pads) just the rotors.

I'd go with ferodo pads. I found the Gen Volvo pads wear fantastically well, but I couldn't cure the squeal from them either. I guess they are just a pretty hard compound. I found the same thing on the volvo 740s. The ferodo pads are ok - and should last a while - don't forget the copper grease either!
