Hi,

I have just checked over my car and it appears that the AWD is not working no drive to rear wheels.
I am sure it must be the transfer box not working.

This is a phase 1 V70 so the troublesome AWD (not too bad though 184000 miles!!)

Does anyone know where I can source a replacement other than main dealer or a repair overhaul kit available I can't seem to find anything on the net.

Has anyone replaced a transfer box is it a nightmare job or not too bad ?

Any help would be much appreciated as it seems a waste to have an AWD that is only driving front wheels a lot of extra weight for nothing!
Also could explain why last two sets of front tyres only managed about 6000 miles each!

There is no noise except on gearchanges you get a whistle noise as drive takes up I presumed a noisey clutch release bearing.

thanks
steve

They aren't that bad to replace. But I don't know of a place to buy them.

Thanks for the replies.

I have been checking out prices and just the angle gear alone is £579 + VAT ! let alone the oil seals etc ?

I have been quoted £ 250 for a used transfer box with 90 day guarantee but I am now at a loss which way to go? Especially as everyone says they are a real weak point! (is used one on last legs?)

Anyone have any views on new against used etc apart from cost now would it work out false economy? I would like at least another 100,000 miles out of car as it still goes so well.

One last question is there any way of diagnosing which part is at fault, ( angle gear, viscous coupling etc) or is it a main dealer job to get the correct diagnosis .Nobody seems to know anything about AWD system other than front and rear tyres must stay within 2mm wear difference.

thanks in advance for any input

Steve, car on lift, if the driveshaft (propshaft) turns but rear wheels don't, Its the viscous coupling. If the driveshaft doesn't turn, it's the angle gear.

Thanks Lee,

I shall jack it up tomorrow and see what happens? I think I shall go for new parts and hopefully get at least another 100K miles.

thank you once again
