Hi,
own a v40 1.6petrol xs 45k miles vreg, full volvo service history, and having cold start problems, done usuall things like buying £45 worth of manuals and tech manuals??? which keep referrring me back to volvo dealers. Trying to avoid costly volvo repairs, so i'm hoping this forum will come up trumps, (astounded by the amount of faults on such a low mileage car, I'm driving and driven vauxhall zafira's for years and only ever had one fault on a sensor, always been fully laden and driven hard, my friend owned this volvo previously and very gently as a retired proffessional might do, his changing to another make, got car very cheap so cannot complain I supose????).
The problem is when cold the car has to be cranked over for 30sec before starting and then goes into full throttle mode for a few seconds (scareing everyone in sight) and then dies down to normal rev's. for the rest of the day its ok. I would suppose its a sensor fault but which one? I've got sensor data details and can check at the ecm, I think! Can anybody point me in the right direction. Read hand book on correct starting proceedure, and there's no fault lights up.

Since the problem could have several causes, it would probably be best to see whether any fault codes have been recorded.

Is the temperature gauge behaving normally? If not then coolant temperature sensor may be faulty.

Other culprits could include a faulty inlet air temperature sensor, spark plugs, a coil breaking down, a dirty/loose/faulty crankshaft sensor etc.

Best of luck tracking it down.

Also, if you're interested, UK members are planning to get together on 18th March - see the Regions section - Europe - UK subforum. Hope you can make it.
