Gday
Its pomoz here...
I have owned a few Volvos previously in UK
1984 760 GLE
1987 245
1989 740 estate
Now living back in OZ....
Saw a 1981 264gle
In great condition 236k klms on it
Dont have much history that i know of (no papers) apart from the service book
Nov 1981 first service
Oct 1991 last service at 123km

My only worry ....is the 6 cylinder motor................
Will it last or fail ....
The reports i had previous ...was that Volvo could make 4 pot motors ... though 6 pots .... not that flash .
My previous 760 MOTORS ,,,,, ONE WAS BRAIN DEAD
,,,,,, the other kept going to garage ( it was a company
car)

Though i am optimistic about this one .......
Though as yet havent bought it .......

Any help and advice gratefully accepted

:00000732: & g'day pomoz.

Check out the "other models" section & ask any questions you may have there about the 6 pot motor - lots of experienced members who can set your mind at rest, I'm sure.

Hope it turns out to be a good 'un.

Gday BB

Finally bought it

It was sitting in the caryard for over 3 1/2 months

Saw it often ...
LAST MONDAY week ...BIT THE BULLET :amen:

A bit spent on it to get it to pass Road worthy Certificate

A question that im still a bit vague on :haha:

Flushing the engine......

Rememeber i have 1981 264 gle ...yes one of those motors 2.8

That to drain engine oil
leave old filter in
Fill with diesel fuel
tick over for 10-15 mins

Drain .....

Add new filter ...and then fill with turbo diesel oil
Run for about 3000klms

Then change oil again

Im thinking
YES .... Flush engine with .... diesel
Though ..after putting new filter on
To fill with normal oil............. non syn
??
As wouldnt the diesel oil be too thin for the old 264 motor

All answers to my query.....

Be greatly accepted ....as Easter is coming up this weekend....car work

Hi Pomoz,
I'm curious, why do you want to flush the engine oil? Are you worried about sludge, if so why? Wouldn't it be a better idea to simply change the oil to a synthetic and change it regularly? Plus clean the flame trap.
Just a suggestion..

Gday EMT

Thanks mate
After a bit of thinking ......
It has been a 1 owner car from new
It has possibly been serviced every 10000 klms

I was a bit worried about the reports ...about 264 or 6 pots ... having a bad repo on oil not getting into certain oil channels hence stuffing up in the cams area .

Though will go with ... change oil and filter ......
Also i have heard .. that using normal engine flush .. is not that flash with engines .
There are lot ideas and thoughts in this area

Thanks again

Pomoz

PS: WHAT IS FLAME TRAP ?

Sorry I took so long to reply.
The flame trap is is part of the positive crankshaft ventilation (PCV) system. It recirculates crankcase vapor to the air intake. They can get sludged up and this causes excessive crankcase pressure leading to oil seal failures. I'm sorry but I don't know where it's located in the V6 engine. In the 4 cylinder engine it is below the inlet manifold.
EMT
P.S. I've heard that the 1987-1990 B280F V6 was much more reliable than the earlier B28F fitted to your 260 , so if your engine eventually fails, replacing it with the later V6 might be an viable option.

Hi Pom,

where are you in Oz - these 264s are fairly rare

the main issue is DID previous owner use proper coolant or just water

I bought mine in 1992 [it is 1976 model] and seems car had actually done much more than 161K on speedo [which had stopped]

it eventually rotted right through the casing [Volvo called it a "porous engine"] BUT at the time with say half a million on the clock it still went 10,000 Km without needing oil top up, so but for water instead of coolant prob still would be fine

1994 got new engine and done 120,000 k so far - I consider that "not even fully run in" for a volvo so if yours is genuine 200,000 or so then should be no probs
