I'v got a 1996 960 that when you unlock the drivers door with the key the alarm system doesn't get deactivated and goes off as soon as you open the door. I do not have a FOB for this car only the key. I have been able to reset the alarm by locking and unlocking the door with the key but only after several attempts and the last time this happened it took over an hour of messing with the door key to get it to reset. I'm assuming there is a switch on the door lock that may be going bad. If so, can i just replace the switch or will something have to be programmed if I replace it?

Try replacing the key....I read in one of the forums that the chip imbeded in the key can become non-functional. Talk to your local dealer about replacing it. Replacing the key is the least costly start to solving your situation.

I would simply disconnect unless you live in a rough area and the alarm means that much to you. If the latter is the case, you must go to a dealer.
