Hello,

Lately I have found myself putting 80 liters in my tank, so basically its just about empty. Is this in anyway bad for the car? Somebody told me once to not let the gas light go on before I refill.

Thanks

It's not recommended, since sedement in the tank will be sucked up by the fuel pump & can block the filter etc. Also, believe it or not, in terms of fire/explosion, a full tank is less volatile (less space for fumes).

:cat: Hi there. For what this is worth to you-I don't know how relevent this is to today's cars, but I have heard that moisture can accumulate if the tank is not kept reasonably full.

Don't read too much into that-but I present it for what it is worth to you

Cheers :57:

This just has to be an "Old Chestnut" that has been doing the rounds for years. I have never subscribed to this sediment idea, as the fuel is always sucked from the bottom of the tank, isn't it? So why is there more sediment when the tank is empty than when it is full, or even half full when the fuel is swishing around in the tank? Also, if this sediment is accumulative and you never suck any of it out, you will not get 80 litres in your tank for the ton of sediment that's there! Doesn't make sense to me...

Have you ever seen the bottom of an old petrol station fuel tank that has been dug out for replacement/disposal? I have!

I can tell you that it is full of crud, which is one of the reasons that during fuel blockades in UK, forecourts could not sell all of the fuel in their tanks. They had to stop pumping before the fuel levels went below a certain level, to avoid potential damage to customers' vehicles caused by dispensing too much sedement.

Vehicle manufacturers would not fit fuel filters if there was no risk. Metal fuel tanks can corrode too, adding to the problem.
