Hi everyone,

Just got our Volvo T5 V50. It's an awesome family wagon. We are loving it.

I just want to find out which engine oil (fully synthetic) would suit the T5 most?

On my list, at the moment, I've got
* Motul
* Shell
* Mobil

I'm leaning towards Motul as here in Australia, they are raving about it. I've used Mobil 1 previously on our other cars, and they are wonderful. No doubts about that.

I'm also thinking of oil viscosity of 5W-40W which is more than enuf.

Please advise.

Hi there.

UK Volvo dealers use Castrol I believe.

I do a 6 monthly oil change between dealer services & use 0W/40 Mobil 1 with SuperSyn.

In Ozzie climate 5W/40 or 10W/40 should be fine.

The oil cap on mine (USA model) says Volvo recommends Castrol. Ive been using Royal Purple though, and change every 3000 miles. I know its overboard as the service plan is at 7500 mile increaments, but I cant help myself.

I go with the viscosity the owners manual recommends (cant remember offhand).

Yup, same as UK, see http://www.volvocars.com/Services/Repairan...l_advantage.htm

Strangely, Volvo don't as such seem to recommend specific engine oil viscosity. Instead, they recommend ACEA specifications i.e. ACEA A3 for all turbocharged petrol engines under extreme conditions.

Viscosity used should reflect ambient temperature range. For quicker cold start oil circulation/wear protection, I tend to use a 0W/40 rather than, say, a 10W/40 - just personal choice/preference.
