Does anyone know why the 2.9 engine was discontinued for 2006?

I have two vehicles with the 2.9, an S80, and a 2005 XC90 T6. Is there reason for concern?

I don't know for sure but maybe some Ford Exec flipped out when he found they were using GM transmissions?
