Hi,
I'm new here and this is my first Volvo. I bought it used last spring and it now has 72000 miles on it. It seems like a great car except on hard left turns there is a very noticable grinding noise from the front end. Sometimes the noise will continue for awhile after the turn has been completed. The car is a 2002 V70XC. Any help or suggestions would be very appreciated. Cathy |

what size tyres and wheels do you have? if they are 18" rims they are well known to rub when performing hard lock each way. I have 18" Nebula's with 235 40 Z18 tyres and they always rub. You can get a fix but it does cost. I know it is annoying and should not occur on an excutive car but it should not do much damage as it only happens at low speeds.

I would start by checking your power steering fluid level. You may have a leak somewhere and the noise is coming from the pump.

HI Cathy,
I have an '04 XC70 with 20,000 miles. Just yesterday it began making a funny sound from the left front making left turns..seems to have more to do with the terrain---initiating turn at the bottom of a hill seems to be what does it. Feels as if an axle is spinning "unconnected" to the left front wheel/tire. sort of a sensation like a manual gearbox where one does not depress clutch fully during a gear change. Does this sound like your problem? |

An update!!!
Based on suggestion of Satrfish I took a look at my power sterring reserviour. Low with obvious seepage around the hose that connects to the pump. I'll be calling the dealer tomorrow!!! Does anyone know if low fluid could harm the pump or the rack? I just had the oil changed at the dealer last week...I thought they look at various fluids when they have the car on the lift. As it is under warranty, I'm reasonably confident that I am covered but it's the potential damage to the pump and rack that I'm concerned about. |
