so about a year and a half ago, we bought a 2001 s80. what an awesome car! it was so comfortable, drove like a dream, a few issues with the integrity of the interior, but overall, we were happy. then the bottom fell out of our happiness as well as our pocket books. we had a major sludge issue that cost us a fortune, have spent ALOT in unexpected repairs (sunroof, brakes, tires), and now it seems the computer chip has gone bad and that is why i'm coming to you guys for your experienced advice.
when we turn our car on, the check engine light comes on and the message tells us that we need to have the emissions serviced. then after driving for a little while, the abs light comes on, the sliding car light comes on, and a few others and it tells me that i have brake failure and should pull over asap.
we took it in and were told that the computer was bad and that we needed a new one.
should this be the case on a 4-5 year old car? could it be anything else?
can someone please wiggle their nose and have this lemon of a car become a strawberry?
thanks!

My 2000 S80 did the same thing, ABS light, track control light(sliding car), exclamation in triagle, check engine, a message that tells me to stop ASAP, and brake light. I had the codes read. I was told it was the ABS control module, brake sensors, and a few other things I can't remember. Once they told me it was all these things, I surched many Volvo forums and everyone told me it was the ABS control module.... they were right. I sent my module to a guy who rebuilds them in Cal. His name is Victor. Not sure of the link. Any how, once I got my module back and put it in... all the warning lights went off ecept the check enging light, which all I had to do is reset it with a OBD11. Good luck!!

Hello

I have had exactly the same problem with my -99 S80 about 11/2 years ago. The problem was ABS-box gone bad. - Yes, it was quite expensive, but since then I have had no problems what so ever with the S80. I´ve driven my car about 70 000 miles since the problem with ABS.
I´ve heart that ABS-box-problems can be common with early models of S80. This is not a fact, just a rumour...

I bought my S80 T6 (99 model) a couple weeks ago. i had an emissions warning light come on. i took it to a volvo tuning house this morning and the problem was that the ECU for the engine (there is a second ECU for the auto trans plugged in next to it) was not in properly.

It seems as tho some volvo chump mechanic has suspected the problem b4 and wedged a rubber between the two ECUs to stop them rattling. A special tool is needed to properly lever the ECU into position.

The improperly plugged ECU was causing the 'lambda' warning light (i.e. emissions light) to come on. This causes the diagnostic computer to register all the cylinders to misfire. Now the ECU is in properly, the problems are all gone.

Having said that, I now note a patch under my car - think i might be leaking oil!!!

PCV Oil seal / Oil trap maybe? Power Steering hose? All of these I've had leaks from before.
