I need some advice. The guy who changes my tires said he didn't think I could 'legally' put 195/65 tires (steel rims) on my V40. Says the maximum allowed is officially just /60. He didn't think it would actually be a problem, but warned I could have problems with the insurance company I had a claim. Ideas?

:cat: Hi there. For what this is worth to you-let the Insurance Company know in writing that you have different size tyres on your vehicle. The Insurance Company could consider it a modification. They may decline claims for any variation of tyre performance which causes/contributes to an accident.

Be sure to specifically ask the Insurance Company if they would decline a claim because of the different sizes.

Insurance Companies are very good at exempting specific items from insurance if they get the chance. Don't give them that chance.

I hope that helps rather than confuses further.

Cheers :haha:

When you buy an insurance policy you are entering into a contract. If you wish to vary that contract, then simply do as Auckland suggests.

In defence of insurers, some years ago when I was a motor insurance underwriter in the London Market, part of my role was to underwrite modified vehicles. You'd be amazed at what modifications were agreed - like gold plating/gold fittings, bullet/blast proofing, engine swaps, stretched bodies - you name it. However, you can't add a ton or more of special glass, kevlar etc. or put a V6 in a mini without upgrading suspension, brakes, tyres etc. at the same time, to ensure the SAFETY of third parties both inside & outside the vehicle.

What are you trying to achieve by fitting /65s? You could end up with slower steering reaction & pogo-stick like handling. Ultimately the tyre could leave the rim under extreme conditions if the higher sidewall deflects too far. Will the higher profile clear suspension & bodywork at the extremes of steering & spring compression? How will you know which tyre pressures to use?
