Hello everyone. I was the proud owner of a Volvo 440 Si 1.9 TD for all of 24 hours - on second day of ownership it's as dead as a dodo so I'm here to seek out some help.

I'm in Scotland, female and know a bit about cars but not totally technically minded!!!

I would call out a breakdown company to help you. Does the engine turn on start up? can you use the lights?

Hello everyone and thanks for the welcomes.

The bl**dy immobiliser is the problem - previous owner saying "Oooh that's never happened to us we're so surprised to hear it"

YEAH RIGHT! I obviously have a zip up my back!

Anyway, the problem is actually the remote control fob is not always working but it would appear that by removing the immobiliser fuse and replacing it everything seems to be reset. The remote locking fob is extremely temperamental and works when it wants to (usually decides not to work at the most inopportune moment of course!). Again previous owner refusing to admit they had this problem and again I say YEAH RIGHT!

Hey ho! I've also got a long list of other problems which I'm going to harass the 400 series area with for months to come I reckon! I might be somewhat sad but I've fallen in love with this old heap of Volvo and I want her to work for me.

:auto: My first car (a 340) was a bag of bolarics but I still loved it and lok on other owners with envy. No volvo is too far gone, they all have a tale to tell.

Do you only have 1 fob? If so, that's "dangerous", especially if it's temperamental.

Might be worth talking to a local independeny Volvo specialist - will be cheaper than a main stealership.

Yes I have only been provided with one fob and agree it's not a very sensible or comfortable situation!

There's a main stealership (love it) just round the corner from me - Clelands of Galashiels (as in John Cleland, two-time British Touring Car champion).

I know how much it costs to go motor racing so I can only imagine how much profit his business makes to support that hobby (especially as he now has TWO sons competing!).

I might call in there for a quote (and a laugh)! I'm not sure where I will find an independent specialist - does anyone know of one in Scottish Borders or maybe Edinburgh?

Maybe contact your local branch of the Volvo Owners' Club - you don't have to be a member, they're nice, helpful people with a wealth of knowledge about Volvos & where to get good service at a fair price.

I remember watching John Cleland - first saw him in BTC in the late '80s I think? I'm feeling old now - cheers!

If you have breakdown service by RAC and AA.
Call them, usually they are able to detect the problem.
