As a follow-up to the "Bonjour" and 5th Gen iPod posts in the S60 forum:

The 5th Gen (Video) iPod will allow FULL control under the Volvo interface box, built by PhatNoise for Volvo, with these "work around" steps:

After more testing, it appears the iPod does NOT have to be only partially charged. When plugging it in, you just have to hit the menu button VERY Fast when the "charged" screen comes up. Then hit menu a 2nd time for the Apple menu. So the revised steps are:

1. Power off, HU NOT selected to "changer" mode
2. Plug in, key on, iPod will lite up and either say charged, or charging - hit the menu button on this screen twice. IF the "okay to disconnect" screen comes on, you are too late, you are locked into Volvo control only mode...
3. When car is off for a long time, car will shut off and finish charging iPod as before. When car is re-started with HU on AND IN changer mode, no problem! The iPod will say "charged" and that screen stays while it starts playing the last song used. Just hit the menu button to go back to the Apple menu.

So its not that diffcult, we just have to master a few steps to get full Apple menu control!

I just spoke with tech support at the "company" that built the interface box for Volvo. They seemed surprised that a "back door or hack" exists in the 5th gen iPod to allow full Apple menu control as "Volvo decided it was a driver saftey issue for the driver to control the iPod, and told us to engineer it in a way to disable the iPod interface..."

So Volvo won't allow me to switch music even stopped in traffic. Engineering the human out of the responsibility loop can only go so far...

I won't name the company that makes the interface, some of you know it if you own the Volvo adapter. Lets leave them out of this, they build good products and were following orders.

I suggest that those of us enjoying the "back door" use of the iPod interface, think REAL heard before we update our 5th Generation iPod Apple software past the current v1.0 :57:

I tried this method to get my Ipod to work, and I was only partially successful. I could get the Ipod to work but not through the car stereo. Even though the Ipod is playing, the changer still only says load cd and there is no sound coming from the speakers. I have a HU803 with the indash 4 disc cd changer.
My dealer called me this morning to let me know that Volvo is sending a technician over on Thursday to show me the Volvo proceedure for getting the adapter to work with the new Ipods.
