(Copy of post to V40 list)

I need to replace the indicator/cruise control column switch (i.e. LH) on my 1997 V40 because the nasty little cruise rocker switch in the end has failed.
I've had the column shrouds off and undone the only visible screw retaining the switch but it's all interlocked with the RH (i.e. wiper) stalk and the airbag connection ring. I've a nasty feeling I might have to remove the steering wheel and the airbag ring.
Does anyone out there have instructions for changing this switch please?
If the wheel has to come off, are there any precautions re airbag other than disconnecting battery and waiting 1/2 hour? Does the centre connector just pull out of the airbag unit?
Thanks for help.
Mike

:excl: Don't try to remove the airbag yourself. i've seen the horrible aftermath if they go wrong. Ow! best get a qualified engineer to remove or replace them as COSHH regs are strict since they are explosive devices. chances are it's two screws holding it onto the steering arm. it'll be in the haynes if you can grab one.

Agree with mong man but if you're determined to go ahead.....

Yup, disconnect battery earth (make sure you know the radio code!) & leave well alone for several minutes before doing any more work.

Releasing the steering column height adjuster will improve access, but you probably figured that out anyway.

The airbag is held in place by 2 Torx screws - wiggle the wheel to get access, as they're fitted at an angle. Ensure you return the wheel to straight-ahead position once these screws are removed.

Treating it as if it is a bomb - i.e. with kid gloves - lift the airbag assembly out of the steering wheel a little & then carefully disconnect the wiring from the back of the airbag assembly (it's a straightforward connector).

Ferchrissake handle/carry the airbag assembly carefully - the padded surface should be kept upwards, especially during storage.

Access to steering column control stalks should then be easy/self explanatory.

When refitting the airbag, remember to re-connect the wiring & don't get it trapped. Tighten the 2 Torx screws to 10 Nm (7 Lbf Ft). Avoid over-tightening.

Once everything is back in place, ensure no one is in the car, leave driver's door open & re-connect the battery. Standing by the driver's door, turn the ignition switch & ensure that the airbag system warning light comes on at first & then goes out as before. Being a cautious sort of chap, personally I'd wear gloves & a pair of safety glasses when turning the ignition key, as the dust given off when airbags inflate is an irritant!

Best of luck, please do let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the comments, guys.
I did get as far as detaching the air bag package from the steering wheel when I first looked at it (yes it is 2 Torx scrwes) but chickened out of removing the plug from it, not being sure whether it was a straight pull or a twist lock.
I also had the column covers off.
Unfortunately it is not at all clear how the switch comes off - the body is all interlocked with the wiper switch body and possibly the airbag contact ring.
Just by looking, I can't tell whether the wheel does have to come off (and of course if it doesn't, the air bag can be left alone :) ), or whether there is just a secret trick to it.
I really need detailed instructions from a manual. I notice there are very cheap manuals on ebay on disc - anyone know if they are any good please?

:haha: Hiya mong man.

Better to check a torque setting etc. than guess & get it wrong mate - I know a few of them for the 40 series, but not that one!!!

Last time I had an airbag off, it was on my brother's 525i & he wouldn't even come into the garage until I'd finished the job!

My work is heavily involved with Health & Safety, so I'll always stress safety tips because I see the consequences of what happens when things are rushed or ignored in the workplace. I am very surprised that the Haynes manual does not mention safety glasses for this job or warn of possible irritants.

How are you getting on with finding a suitable venue for a 2006 meet? Kent sounds good.....
