Its not that all difficult actually, once you've done it.

OKAY!! After about a month of looking at this single post, waiting for the weather to change and finally finding the stones to set out and do this... I've finally come to the point where I no longer need my caving light for driving at night.

Have to say, it wasn't too hard but it wasn't too easy.

Found this after, of course finishing up, on volvospeed where someone was kind enough to take pictures while they were taking apart their dash. Well... kinder then me anyway.

Replacing bulbs can be quite simple, but you must be very patient with her.

I have successfully replaced instrument cluster bulbs twice ...removing the dash top. What I don't see mentioned in this post is to NOT reconnect the battery/start engine until the passenger airbag is reconnected. I drove my 850 with the dash top out (ie pax airbag not connected). It was not a surprise that the SRS light stayed on. Unfortunately, once the SRS fault code is set, the SRS will stay on after the airbag is reconnected. The normal OBDII scanners cannot clear the SRS fault code...they can't even see the SRS fault. Very few independent repair shops can clear SRS fault code.

I had this issue, but the SRS light eventually went out on its own after a few weeks.

OK...so I bought the bulbs from my local Volvo dealership. The shift selector seems straightforward enough, think I can handle that easily enough. But - how do I take the cover off of the climate control? I can slide it out of the dash, but I dont know how to actually get inside the housing to take out the malfunctioning bulb and replace it. I'm feel like an **** - I just want light! Ligggghhhttttt!!!!!

I have an ECC head but I think both the manual and automatic would be the same. Remove the radio and reach inside to the back of the unit and wiggle it a bit while pulling forward. You might want to wear gloves. It should pop out towards you. There are three connectors on the back that need to be removed and then you have it loose in your hands. DON'T take the screws out that hold the faceplate on. I tried and it doesn't come off (at least not easily). Take out the four or five screws that hold the metal body to the plastic front. It will come apart just enough to get your fingers in there to turn the bulb holders and remove them. There were three bulbs in my unit. The bulbs are "bayonet" style and pull straight out and push back in the same way. I used "74" that I picked up at an auto parts store. GE, Sylvania or Wagner it doesn't matter the bulb number is the same. I used the Sylvania Long Life just because I do hope they last longer as I hate pulling things apart. Each time is just another chance to break something so I'd suggest just replacing all there.
