Can anyone explain to me how the gear selection works in a volvo 440?

i struggle to select reverse gear on the car, and wondered what adjustments are possible?

the symtom seems to be that the gear stick will not move far enough to the left to get it into the right position.... 1 through to 5 work fine.

Lift the button up before you push the gear stick to the left then up like gear 1.

You should be in reverse then!
