I just purchased a 2006 S40 T5 AWD. I normally do my own oil and filter changes.
Where is the oil filter and drain plug. The owners manual is not much help in the area of owner servicing.

Dont know if this will help, but on my s60 the filter is underneath on the right- front of the engine block. Drain plug is towards the back of the block, in the middle.

I was just underneath my 2006 S40 looking for the drain plug. It appears to be hidden by that large plastic cover. I see no way to change the oil without removing the cover. (Engineered to specifically make money for Volvo service!!!)

The oil filter is a cartridge type filter that is to the left of the engine underneath the hood. It takes a 36mm 6pt socket to remove the top of the cannister to remove/replace the filter cartridge.

I want to do some of these in-between major service changes myself too, is the filter tough to reach and remove?
Do you know if there is anything else to change or do during a Volvo oil change?

The filter is a bit messy but easy to change if you have the right wrench to remove the screw on lid to the oil filter housing.

The filter is not underneath the car. It sits just left of the engine towards the front.

You just pull the old filter out and push in a new one. You can also change the ring gasket seal at this time that should come with your cartridge filter.
