:460:

Hi Just new to this group
I have a volvo 440, and i like the car alot,
i have been having a lot of problems with the cooling syestem of the car, after a lot of near misses of over heating and hoping that the head gasket does not blow, we have discovered that the problem maybe that the water pump is on its last legs.
just asking and can anybody help me before we start work on the car,
is the pump driven off the fan belt or the timing belt or the cam shaft belt,
the volvo is a 1991/2 model

It should run off of the alternator drivebelt, so you'll need to slacken off the alternator. Models with air-con have a separate, much shorter alternator drivebelt though, in which case the longer belt is the one in question.

Obviously make sure you clean the mating surfaces thoroughly before fitting the new pump and whatever you do, make sure you use a new gasket & tighten the waterpump bolts evenly & in diagonal order to 13Nm (10 lbf ft) - that won't feel very tight, but much tighter & you'll strip the threads.....

Correct torque for the water pump pulley is 20 Nm (15 lbf ft).

Good luck baconbuttiepete.
