Hi

I need to replace a headlight unit on my V70. I have the replacement unit but need some advice on the procedure for swapping them over. I have looked at it today and it appears that you need to remove the bumper in order to do this.

I normally rely on Haynes manuals for instructions but they haven't produced one for this model yet! Any advice or info out of a workshop manual would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks

Stuart

I also have to replace a cracked headlight on my 01 V70 T5. I have not replaced it yet because the dealer informed me that the front bumper must be removed. It would cost us about $800 to replace the headlight. I used to laugh at 80's Cadillacs where the bumper had to be removed just to replace burned out bulbs. I guess Volvo is now doing the same thing with their cars. Bad move on the part of Volvo.

I drive an S70, not a V70, I was under the impression that most of the repair issue are the same between the two. Hopefully this helps, but if not, sorry.

On my s70, to replace the headlight bulb only, it's painfully EASY. On either side, there are two bulbs- one for high, one for low. The highs are toward the centre, the lows on the outside.

The bulbs are about $20 or so from your local "do it yourself" auto parts place like Autozone.

If the high is out, you remove a small plastic cover by simply pressing down on an unlock latch (the latch is on the bottom side of the cover piece) and pulling the cover away. You may need to slide some wires out of the way. This reveals the bulb "harness" if you can call it that. It's two wires running to a plastic socket. There's a small wire bracket to hold the scoket in place, you just squeeze the ends together to free the socket. The bulb will of course come along with the socket. Unplug the bulb from the socket and replace. You might want to use some bulb grease to prevent corrosion. (They sell little packets of it for about a dollar at the auto stores, one packet is enough for about a hundred bulbs) Be sure to snap the brakcet back in place and then replace the plastic cover piece. There's a little foam "weatherstrip" running around the plastic piece, just make sure that hasn't been knocked loose or out before you replace the cover. The cover has two prongs that slide into the top side and you just push down and snap in the bottom side.

If it's your low out, you'll be looking for a plastic circular cap. It looks just like a mayonaise jar lid. You unscrew it, pull it away and youll see the same bulb/socket. Remove and replace as described above and then replace the lid. The lid is keyed so you'll have to orient it correctly or it will not fit in.

That's it, your bvulb should be replaced.

Now, I'm guessing that this probably hasn't been any help because you're looking to replace the entire headlight assembly. Unfortunatley, I haven't done one of those yet :( But if that's what you need, good luck with it! O, and here's a website that might help...

Hi, I have a headlight assembly to replace, and I would love some information. But please read my question before answering with a relevant answer instead of some smartypants off topic answer.

Hi SK799,

To replace the headlight assembly the Volvo instructions tells you to remove the bumper! You can only remove one side but there is a risk of cracking the bumper!

I have already changed one and with some care you can replace it by only unbolting the bumper from one side. The bolts are hidden behind the rubber strip and at each side there is a small screw just in the lip of the wheel arch. The headlight screws are difficult to get to even with the bumper removed and be extra careful if you have the headlamp wipers option fitted.

Would recommend getting VADIS to look at the pictures.

Extra pair of hands is not essential but makes it a bit easier.

Bob
