I just checked out http://www.vexedvolvo.org/ .It has all the details. Volvo eluded a recall by calling it an extended warrenty . They will reimburse all that replaced an ETM and will cover all affected models for 10 years or 200,000 miles. If it is working now you have to wait til it breaks and if you don't get killed by your car stallinging front of an on coming semi your repair will be free! Not the best deal but, better than nothing.

Hi Folks,

Thanks to this forum, I was empowered with the necessary information to take my 98K+ 2001 V70 2.4T into the Volvo dealership with it couphing and sputtering, reasonably confident (ok, confident is probably not the right word!) that Volvo would assume responsibility for their design flaw and make all repairs at no cost!!! Sound like a fantasy or what?? But alas!, in all seriousness, thats exactly what happened!!! This was the second time my ETM had failed. September 2003 was the first time and I was charged $870 then. Today, the codes revealed the same problem. Once they validated that my VIN qualified for the 200K extended warranty, it was a no hassle event. But wait! There is more...I asked what I could do to inquire about reimbursement for the '03 charges, they gave me the Volvo customer service number (1.800.458.1552) and sure enough, after validating my VIN, I qualified for reimbursement as well!!! Customer Service gave me the address to send in a copy of the repair statement for verification. OH HAPPY DAY!!

The car is back to running great again. One additional note; the replacement module is very similar to the original. From what was explained to me, Volvo will be coming out with a software upgrade in March '06 they are optimistic will resolve the present ETM issue. Lets hope so.

Thank you all for actively participating in this forum and providing a wealth of knowledge for all of us to benefit by.

Mark

I'm new to all this. Is the etm the same as the throttle body?
And do I need to take it to the dealership for a position bulb failure message?

OK. My rebate is here. 208USD. I paid over 2k to get this repaired.. and they have rebated just 208 dollars. Anybody else seen such low sums for the Throttle body repair rebate?

Hello, I got a full rebate, but it only cost 386.00 to remove and replace the ETM, but I had to tow my car to the dealer ship because we were afraid to drive it there, and Volvo did not reimbures me the towing fee of 83.00. That seems ridiculous. Has anyone else had the same issue, or gotten reimbursement for the towing of their car?

I received the Volvo ETM warranty letter in May and submitted it immediately for my total cost of $753.33. This was for my 2001 Volvo S60 2.4 T that had 73,204 miles on it at the time of the ETM failure. I received my response from Volvo today saying I was not reimbursed because either mileage exceeds 200,000 or my 2001 Volvo is more than 10 years old. Is this some type of joke?

The ETM failure caused me to stall on a Highway with no shoulder. I was rear ended causing almost $7000 in body damage. I should sue them for the full amount !!!!

I have a code # 123 show up on my code reader which I believe is the throttle sensor. It will not reset. Does anyone know if this has anything to do with the ETM, which I assume is short for electronic throttle management?
Thanks,

It was part of the original letter.

In the end they paid us (retroactively) for all the shenanigans the dealer(s) - read multiple - put us through. I think they even paid for the fluid flush... What a joke that was.. fluid flush on a sealed transmission when they already knew there were problems with the ETM.

I have an appointment with the Stealership on Tuesday morning to have my ETM looked at under warranty because my ETS light keeps coming on and going off. I have already had the Software upgrade done last year but I am still having the ETS light come on and off pretty much every day. In the morning it's off, in after driving for almost an hour to work it is back on again

I would be interested in how you got on at the dealership with your problem of the ETM light going on intermittently. I have the same with my XC 2000 at 60K miles. The car runs fine and I don't really want to take the time to get it checked if it is not urgent at this time.

I took my car to Gallo Volvo in Worcester Mass. Now before I tell you this story I must tell you that I brought the car(2001 S80 T6) to my friends shop BEFORE bringing it to the dealer. He has 34 years as being a mechanic and has his own garage. He put it on the scope and no error codes showed up. He went threw the whole car and came up with the ETM is bad. So knowing that there is a recall on this he tells me to bring it to the dealer to have it changed out. An Honest Person!!!!The car surges when the gas is pressed and stalls. Ok so now I bring it to Gallo Volvo. 1st mechanic says"Oh you have a transmission problem" I was not satisfied with this because I know the tranny shifts fine. So I ask for a different mechanic to drive the car with me in it. 2nd mechanic says " no I dont feel any tranny problem but if you leave the car we can do a new timing belt and a tune up and this MIGHT take care of the problem. So I ask to speak to the manager. The manager tells me that "Yes we know there is a problem with the ETM but we cant change it out unless the etm light comes on and the car trows us this code" Are you kidding me? They know its a problem with the etm but instead of fixing the problem they would rather charge me for a transmission, timing belt and a tune up........I believe we as Americans would call this STEALING dont you think? Awesome job Gallo Volvo but im not falling for it. If myself or my family get hurt in this car after posting it on the internet, im sure you will have to explain it to someone.

Tell them you will do it provided Volvo Corporate authorize it. Or ask to speak to the district rep for Volvo. That should slow them down. Because if you have a new transmission put in then Volvo will have to reimburse you for that too.

I can understand your frustration. there is a few things you should understand though. chances are the ETM is bad, but as a dealership can not just throw one on becuse people come in and say "my ETM is bad." Yes we as techs know there is a problem but if they were to just put a new ETM in 2 things would happen one the tech that did the job would not of gotten one red cent for is work, and second they most likely would have taken the cost of the ETM out of his paycheck. In order to have the ETM replaced the dealership has to get approvel from the rep. in order to do that they need to have a DTC (daig trouble code) or it has to fail a ETM test.

there are a few other things that can cause the faults that are described as being a ETM and the dealership has to sort through them and make sure that your ETM is causing the problem. if they dont and just toss one in the only people that suffer is the dealership...mainly the tech. so i know its frustrating but please cut the shop some slack.

Did you at least get some warnings in your message window or check engine light at some point?

These cars only lock in a error code if it occurs on 2 sequential drive cycles (at least with the codes I had while dealing with ETM problems). Early ETM failures might be intermittent enough to not occur on back to back drive cycle.

If you are getting error messages or check engine lights but goes away after turning off the car, then I suggest you get a OBDII reader and read the code as soon as warnings come on before turning off the car. I think this would help the dealer service department in determine the right action. An alternative is to get to a auto parts store as soon as the fault shows up, borrow their OBDII reader and retrieve the code.

You asked customers to have sympathy to the mechanics, but where are the sympathies to the customers themselves? Seriously, the last thing on my mind is to think about if the mechanic would get paid or not when I loose MY time, MY money, and being looked at as an **** with a bank account. You have to remember the scale of spending here, we would shop till we drop to save a few bucks, but we don't always have the luxury of shopping around for car repair price when our cars are sitting dead and we need the cars to work. Dealerships know that too well. We as customers are at the murcy of the auto repair shop!! And may I just add that they were selling other repairs (transmission, tuneup, etc, etc)to the poster. Whether the mechanics get paid or not this is Volvo's management issue.
