I'm a new member with a 2005 XC90. This is my third Volvo, and definitely my favorite one!

It's not without its problems though. Actually only one, but it won't go away.

When I am backing up, or sometimes turning, the front end makes a "Clunking" sound or even a "crunching" sound. It almost always happens when I am pulling into my garage!

I've brought it to the dealer twice now, and of course they can't replicate the problem. I'm tempted to bring the technician to my drive way and have him listen as I'm pulling into the garage!

Does any one else seem to have this problem?

I have had this problem twice with my 2004 XC90. The first time the dealer worked on it they said that there was a tech notice for this problem and added some Loctite to the fasteners holding some component of the steering together (I didn't go into details at the time) and this seemed to work for a time. About 6 months later, the problem re-appeared.
On Thursday of last week, they replaced the whole steering rack.
Right now, the steering feels good and tight and clunk free.

We see how long that lasts, but good for now.

I am having the exact same problem with my 05 XC90. The dealer was unable to replicate this problem and it has been as frustrating as the iPod connectivity kit that Volvo announced back in Feb 2005 - the first iVapor in my opinion, seems they will never release it afterall... Any input on either issue would be appreciated. Thanks. Matt.

Hi- I have the same problem on my 2005 xc90. I described it to the dealer as a "deep creaking sound". It happens when I am parallel parking or turning into a space. I could not replicate it either for the dealer. It sounded like it was coming from the front end. Let us know if you get to the bottom of it.
