Good Day Everyone -

I own a 1998 Volvo V90 Wagon. It's a sturdy workhorse, but I think it might be about to die on me - most likely in an inconvenient place (such as on the way to school to pick up my daughter). The battery warning light has been staying on for a couple of minutes after the rest of the warning lights have disappeared. On my route to my daughter's school, it stays on for approximately20 seconds, goes out and then comes back on when I push on the gas pedal (to cross an intersection that is in route) and again goes off, but this time for the duration of the use that day (I use my bicycle for commuting). This has been going on for a couple of weeks now. I had it looked a nearby Goodyear facility and they told me (after relieving me of $50) that the battery is fine and they couldn't detect any problems with the alternator. So, I've been going merrily on my way figuring that it's one of those computer warning glitches. Until yesterday. It started up falteringly not appearing to have quite its normal enthusiasm to get underway.

Has anybody had similar experiences - should I immediately find a mechanic?

Thanks much

 Hi there.

I assume that if there was a squealing noise on start-up or acceleration then you would have mentioned it, so a slipping drivebelt on the alternator seems unlikely.

Maybe have the alternator & battery checked elsewhere - the alternator should be putting out at least 13.5 volts minimum, between 14V & 15V is better.

Another possibility could be another electrical item having a fault & drawing too much current e.g. air con/climate control. Perhaps next time the light appears, you could switch off electrical items one by one & see whether this reveals a likely candidate. I'd also have the main earthing strap checked for condition & security.

Hope you manage to track it down.
