Ebay is one source (always use PayPal) & local breakers' yards too.

A good auto spares shop may be able to supply new parts, even if they have to order them in - I've ordered stuff from halfords before & had it in 48 hours. Try these places for key cutting too.

A few parts will be Volvo only, only replace these parts if you have to!

The heater controls do light up - you're better off buying a Hayne's manual & removing the heater control panel (no need to disconnect control cables, just pull the panel out a little to get access to the bulb to replace it - should be a push fit bulb I think).

Side/Headlight switch may be trickier to replace the bulb on - I've never worked on one myself, best advice I can give is to treat it as gently as possible when removing & handling it.

Good luck.

:grouphug: i find for cheap parts halfords is kinda slow. all the times i ordered anything other than ford fiesta parts they got it wrong. try your local car shop, or find someone with a trade pass and sneak into a trade warehouse. the prices are incredible. i've got all my S40 parts from a local trade shop and paid less than half for everything. if you can't find one, head over to me, and i'll take you in.

Hiya mong man.

Generally I would agree with you re halfords, but I am very lucky in that I have one of their superstores 10 minutes down the road and there's a lady in the parts dept. who has worked there (and in the smaller shop halfords had in the area before that) since before I moved here 19 years ago. She double-checks & cross-references everything to make sure she gets the right part for exactly the right year/model.

If it's not on the screen or not clear from the screen, she gets out piles of catalogues, checks one manufacturer's part number against another, then uses a 3rd book to make sure both those numbers tie-up! Honest, she's brilliant & has never let me down. Have never waited more than 2 days for an ordered part - last thing I ordered was a spare locking wheelnut "key" socket that came from the manufacturer in Germany. Arrived in 48 hours & cost me 20% of the price the manufacturer was quoting me online to supply the part direct!

Hi,

I have a bit of a problem with my 440. I got it from my grandad..he said when he gave it to me that the car got struck by lightning once and when he went out to see what happened he said that the horn was blowing and the wipers were wipeing and water was coming out of the jets, so he took the fuse out of the fuse box.

I have got the MOT next week and the car wont pass if the horn doesnt work. I have told the man to fix the horn then do a MOT.

Yesterday, I put the fuse back in to the car (fuse 27), and the horn worked so i thought it was fixed. The then you turn the headlights on but the wipers were wiping and water was coming out of the jets, so i unpluged the fuse. But i still have a problem..when i turn the lights on water comes out of the jets (the wipers don't move), so i turn the lights off and it stopped....also if the lights are on and but the full beam on the water stops.

So I was looking in the haynes manual and it said nothing to help me.

I then put the fuse back in and turned the lights on and pressed the horn and the water stopped, so i took the fuse out, turned the lights off...then turn the lights on and it did it again.

Now today, Every time i turn the lights on the dipped beam light come on the near side and only the side light on the off side, but if I wash the screen the off side light main beam comes on.

But if the fuse is out and the headlights are on and then the washers come on, if you press the horn the washer will stop.

Please could someone help! or tell me what the car mechanic will do to fix my car, and how much you think it will cost.

Thanks

:o Omigawd billie, that sounds like one doozie of an electrical fault!

I've never heard of a car getting struck by lightning. Their tyres stop them from grounding to earth, so the lightning normally grounds through something else like a tree or a building.

It sounds like you have a short circuit in the wiring loom somewhere & if that is the case then based on your limited experience with cars, I think you will need to find a cheap auto-electrician to trace the fault & fix it.

I hope I'm wrong of course & that another member of the forum has a better (& cheaper) solution. Good luck.

I will take it to the Garage and hopefully he can fix it!

Hi There,

Now when I checked my light fuses they had all blown. This is because the water for the wipers is trying to use the headlight fuses.

How do i stop this from happening temporarily? Does the water jet use the headlight fuses anyway? How can i stop this short circuiting from happening.

I dont mind even if i have to switch off the whole water jet thing just until the 19th Dec when it goes in.

Help!!!

Thanks

 I think you'll find that the wiper/washer system has its own fuse & the headlight main beam fuses are separate. The lid of the fusebox should have a label in showing which circuit each fuse protects.

I strongly suspect that there is a short circuit somewhere. If the car was struck by lightning then resultant heat could have melted insulation within the wiring loom, causing now bare wires to melt together/touch (short), in turn causing fuses to blow. You can check this by operating the lights, wipers & washer again & if fuses blow you either have a faulty component somewhere or, as I suspect, a short circuit.

The only other thing I can think of is the relays having been damaged by lightning.

Good luck.
