Hi everyone

I'm about to get my s40 t4 lowered.

I've done some searching around and the lowest various manufacturers (European as well as Ozzie) make their springs is 35mm. The only way to get the slammed look is to go for coilovers which H&R make but costs quite a bit.

I don't want to go for coilovers due to financial reasons but ultimately that would be the way to go. However, there is a workshop here who are willing to lop off a coil to drop the springs to 50mm instead of 35mm. My concern is with cut springs, the ride will be crap and the fronts would be ultra close to the bump stops.

Would I cause any damage by going this path?

Cheers

Henri

Tforce,
Cutting the spring to lower the car is a bad idea. The suspension parts will probably self-destruct before long. The reason is, the suspension is designed to travel a particular distance in order to smooth out the ride. In addition, the springs are designed with a "load rate" which allows maximum travel under most conditons, without ever reaching the end of the travel ("bottoming out"), which can break things. If you cut the coils, chances are you will bottom out on even moderate bumps in the road, and things will eventually break.

If you get coil-overs, or shorter higher rated springs, this should prevent any bottoming out. But be aware that the ride will change DRAMATICALLY in most cases, and you will have that neck snapping jolt when you go over bumps. I put a set of lowering springs from IPD on my 242 GT Volvo, and I love the look and the handling, but the car is not a daily driver, so I can tolerate the rough ride. If you have a cuppa on the way to work, better drill some holes in the floorboards to allow the coffee to run out.

Hi guys

Thanks for your advice. I would never cut stock springs. The workshop here in Perth who did my lowering on Friday ordered some sport rated progressive springs which drop the car about 35mm. They then measured it up and lopped off a little bit of the lowered springs so that the car would drop 50mm.

the car seems to ride fine. There is still suspension travel on the front (my main concern) the back is fine. The ride is a little bumpier and stiffer but to be expected from lowered springs.

i hope nothing breaks....

Hi Tech:

Check out my car pics in my garage... it doesn't look as low in the pics cos my driveway is on a slight angle but on a flat road and in real life looks lower than the pics convey.

So far happy with mod. Further mod will be to install puke bags for the rough ride

Here's hoping you wont have to go through a lot of speed-humps along your routine ride.

Ampangbear: The ride is quite rough actually and I am reminded of the days when I had my slammed Nissan 180SX. Those **** speed humps... I always have the fear of the middle of the chassis beaching itself on a hump. :)

Might have to upgrade shocks now as it can be quite bouncy.

If you have a dealer around you that could fully-customise the shocks, it would be better, to strike a balance between performance-use and comfort.
