1) Have you done full-piping on the exhaust?
2) Changing air-filters to the performance ones?
3) Installing boost controllers (manual or electronic)?

Changing chips should be the last resort.
Even then, you may need to 'reinforce' some parts of your suspensions too, so that you car can 'take' the additional power when you change the chip. Factory-standards are..well, factory-STANDARD.

Whats your budget?

Alot of diff opinions on whats best, but without looking into prices, a manual boost controller, and air filter or some type of upgraded air intake would poss be the cheapest for 20-30hp. Exhaust are great, but can get expensive.

In the General section I made a post with links to sites. You should be able to find almost anything you want from some of the sites.

I havent seen any for the R, but basically, it allows u to adjust for low and high boost. They can be in/on the dash, in the glovebox, etc. Manuals are nice because theyre cheaper, electronic ones can even work as progammers, to some extent, and can come with their own digital display.

Boost controllers are an excellent way to get more oomph. Just beware that boost is not screwed up too high especially with stock exhaust, fuel and intake systems.

The best way to ensure that the boost you run is safe is to fill the car up with the fuel you intend to use daily and put the car on a dyno and steadily increase the boost whilst checking the air/fuel ratios.

Beware also of the temperature conditions. Some boost controllers don't adjust the boost levels down during cold conditions. As we all know cold conditions can cause boost to increase arbitrarily. Also with hot conditions, you don't necessarily want to be running high boost levels.

I used to have a Turbosmart dual stage in cabin manual boost controller in my Subaru and it worked a treat. Then I went to an electronic boost controller with an aftermarket computer and I noticed that boost would creep when the temperature dropped.

Evidently, the R types are already set at 1 bar boost (14+ psi). How much more can they take without problems? I never realized their boost was so high to begin with.

:cat: Hi there. I doubt that this idea will give you everything you want-but have you tried using 98.0 octane fuel?

From personal experience, (I use BP's Ultimate 98.4 octane petrol) I would recommend trying the higher octane rated fuel before undertaking major expenditure. The performance improvement is dramatic when you stimulate the turbo. Starting in cold weather is considerably better also.

Just my experiences for what it's worth to you.

Cheers :)

Heres some links with good info;

Until these posts, I never realized boost controllers were not great for Volvos. Looks like ECUs are better

from what little I know, the R engines offer a bit more solidarity than the standard 2.5T. They've got aluminum heads and forged pistons and rods, though I couldn't tell you if they're running the same cams or not.

NEVER EVER use a boost controler on one of our cars...

Go with an intake, then an ECU then an exhaust. dont forget suspension stuff along the way (sway bars and springs)

If you want some good extra power do this.

3" downpipes to a 2.5" free flowing catback with Magnaflow muffler. Get this done by a local exhaust shop.

As far as ECU tuning look into, IPD, RICA, BSR, EST, Upsolute, SpeedTuning USA.

You should also do a full STAGE ZERO, look over on VS for more info on that.

But with just those mods listed above you should net like 300hp possibly.

A MBC isn't good on ME7 cars, they don't like MBC's. Don't use one.
