Hi

I drive a V40 2.0 with hand operated 5 speed gear. In the past I used to drive an automatic geared Volvo 340 (17 years old car). The 340 could be started without the brake being applied. You switch to forward mode or to reverse driving mode and you still shouldn't apply brake force. The car will stay in rest with the engine running at idle.

Lately I made a test drive in a modern 2nd hand (2002) automatic geared car (Mitsubishi Space Star by the way). When I switched the gear into forward driving mode or in reverse driving mode the car started to drive forward (in reverse mode backward). So I had to apply the brake every time and all the time while I was waiting for a traffic light.

Does anybody know if this is ordinary procedure for modern automatic geared cars? Maybe there is something wrong with the car?

B.

My experience with automatics is that I have to apply the brakes when the gears are engaged. Let's see other comments.
