Mine's a 2002 V40 but I think that the high level brakelight setup is the same.

It's a simple job, all you will need is a screwdriver. First find the retaining clips for the cover - carefully release them & remove the cover. Next disconnect the wiring connector as gently as possible. Finally locate & remove the retaining screws & remove the brake light unit.

If the LED-type lights in the unit have started to fail, I don't think that they are serviceable/replaceable - you'll need to replace the unit. This part is fairly expensive, so maybe try a breaker's yard or eBay first.

Good luck - please let us know how you get on.

You cannot really see the 2 clips. With the tailgate open and the palms of your hands facing you, insert your fingers under the bottom edge of the cover, near to its bottom corners. Gradually increase the pressure pulling the cover towards you & eventually it should come off - makes a loud noise when it does. Then slide the cover downwards to release its upper edge.

Because of lack of space it is difficult to get a tool inside the cover but if you have small fingers you may be able to lift the cover enough to get a flexible ruler or a thin screwdriver in there, to release the clips more gently.

Once the cover is off, gently unclip the wiring connector (it may be worth taping the wiring to one side once disconnected) and undo the 2 cross-headed retaining screws at the bottom of the light assembly.

Progress report awaited with interest :excl:
