Can anyone offer advice on replacing a broken timing belt on a 1988 Volvo 240? It looked easy at first, but it became more difficult as I proceeded. It's getting to the bottom gear that is the problem. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks....kleuch48

What is the matter you can't get the bolt for the lower pulley loose?

You will need to remove the Fan and the schroud.
Then you will need to somehow hold the pulley to loosen the bolt.

If you have no way to hold the pulley, a tool called an 'Impact Gun' will remove the bolt without the need to hold the pulley in place. It is an 'Air Tool', meaning that you will need an air compressor.

Of course, if you are having your mechanic take care of it, the point is moot.

BTW: I don't know if that motor bends/breaks valves when the belt breaks. If it does, it wouldn't be a job I would recommend to an amateur.

All of the Volvo 4 cylinder engines with the exception of the 16Valve and the S40 DOES not bend valves if it breaks the belt.Only the white engines do.(5,6,4 in the S40)
