I dont know why, but my brakes on my 1992 Volvo 240 Sedan make a really annoying and embarassing humming noise when I use them. If I brake hard, there usualy isnt a noise, but if I am putting half pressure to the brakes, then they make this really loud humming noise that even vibrates my head. Its really embarassing and I want to know what it is before I take it to the shop and have them charge me for just looking it over.

Sounds like warped rotors.

They will need to be replaced.

Do you also feel it in the brake pedal and the steering wheel?

the person at the shop said that she knows what noise im talking about cause all volvos have it and it just hapens when the brakes heat up, but i am still convinced that the noise shouldnt be tehre so loud and everytime i brake, because i havent heard any other 240s make that sound before.

You need to get it hot and then take them for a ride and make them listen to the noise.

I have driven alot of car that have the problem like you have in the end it was warped rotors making noise when hot.

After he sanded down the rotors and added some gel or something to the brake pads, it doesnt do the noise as much. but when i talked to the guy and told him that the brakes need to get hot first before u hear the noise, he said that maybe im applying the brakes to long causing it to heat up more and make noises. but i brake normally and everything so that cant be it, but anyways i swear he told me the rotors were all fine and none of them were warped.

no he didnt mention anything about that, i should ask him i guess. but i noticed that the noise come easily if u first brake completely, then very slowly take ur foot off the brake until it barely starts moving, then the noise comes choppy, but if u let go a little more the noise becomes the steady humming im talking about.

Make sure you drive with them and show them that and make sure they measure runout and give you the measurements that they got.

for sure dads know a lot more of these things [and ways of the world in general] than those garage dudes after yr money

the more you learn about your own car and maintenance in general the more you save on that score but ALSO it sets you in good stead for a whole swag of other "life skills" - ie GW Bush [and our Rodent] is a whole lot more deceptive than your garage man so you need to learn when to say "dont take me for an **** man"
