I'm at a loss for how to free the rust-welded threaded cap that holds the front strut inserts in the tube. I've had the whole thing out, spring off, in the vise, channel locks clamped, and there isn't quite enough material to grab to turn them out. I've soaked them in solvent, and had to put it all back together because my wife needs to drive it. I wanted to put the torch to it, but I wasn't to keen on causing an explosion, so I am appealing to the collective knowledge of this fine group of DIY'ers who work on rusty stuff and maybe have run into this before.

Can I heat it up safely? The seals are pretty well shot anyway, and I though heat and a shot of keyboard duster (air in a can) might expand/contract it enough to free it up. Anybody got any ideas? I'm stuck, but not giving up......yet

I wouldn't try the heat.

Try to get a BIG pipe wrench and use it to try to break it loose.

A good hammering may do the job too...

Tried the pipe wrench too, but there's not enough material protruding from the top to muckle on to. I tried notching it with a cold chisel, then air hammering it with the chisel point, and all that does is disintegrate what little I have to work with. I stopped before I ground it down flush with the tube. I hope I don't have to get a new assembly--it looks like the strut tube is built in to the steering knuckle.

Still taking suggestions, keep 'em coming

You might want to try to get a used one.Or just cut the ring off and get just a new ring.
